Interactive Rubrics

In this Lunch & Learn we talked interactive rubrics.  Sites like Rubistar are great in that they give you access to thousands of premade rubrics and simplify the process of creating rubrics from scratch.  Where I feel they can go further is by making those rubrics interactive.  In comes G Suite tools like the OrangeSlice Docs Add-on and Google Forms.

OrangeSlice

OrangeSlice allows you to grade assignments (with a rubric) from within Google Docs.  This simplifies the setup time of rubrics and get the feedback to kids even quicker because it can be shared back to kids immediately via Google Classroom.  Check out the video below for a step-by-step guide to using OrangeSlice.

Google Forms

The down side to OrangeSlice is it is only available on Google Docs.  Google Forms fills in that shortcoming because it can be used with any project, writing assignment, etc.  The trick is using the “Multiple Choice Grid” option.  When combined with Google Sheets you can even have the data from the Form auto grade and send grades and feedback to students. Check out the setup video below for all the steps.

Finally, you can print and use this graphic as a way to remember how to create your own interactive rubric.

This was a fun session.  We spent the entire time in YouTube working with the Creator Studio, Video Editor, Annotations, Cards, and Enhancements.  We utilized these tools to create fun alien invasion newscasts. Check out the image below to see a rundown of each of these features and couple of videos that were created in class.  You can get the Alien Invasion Newcast activity here.
